HHLA joint venture HANSAPORT's handling facilities include three discharge berths with a water depth of 15.1 m for ocean-going ships, as well as two additional berths for feeder vessels and inland waterway craft. Along quays altogether over 1,000 metres’ long, depending on ship size and cargo type, up to 110,000 tons can be unloaded here within 24 hours. An area of 350,000 square metres is available for the vast piles of ore and coal. The interplay of unloaders, conveyor belts and shunting locomotives has been largely automated at HANSAPORT. It makes ecological sense that two-thirds of these heavy loads should be transported onwards by rail, and the remainder by inland waterway vessels.
