Jens Hansen was born on 15 July 1968 in Elmshorn, Germany. He studied mechanical engineering in Hamburg from 1990 to 1994 before beginning his professional career as an engineer at Hanseaten-Werkstatt in Rellingen. Between 1996 and 2000, he furthered his education by completing a business administration degree. During this time he also worked as a mechanical and systems engineer on a freelance project basis.
From 2001 to 2003, Jens Hansen was a controller in the executive departments of Technology and Logistics at Axel Springer AG in Hamburg. He joined HHLA at the end of 2003, where he first built up the Controlling department at the HHLA Container Terminal Altenwerder (CTA). In 2007, he took over as Head of Controlling at HHLA Container Terminals GmbH and became a member of the management at HHLA Container Terminal Burchardkai in 2011. In 2014, he also became a member of the management of the Service Center Burchardkai (SCB).
On April 1, 2017, Jens Hansen was appointed to the Executive Board of HHLA by the Supervisory Board
