As part of our Expansion Project, the Safety Engineer will play a key role in designing a new automated terminal. Your focus will be on machinery safety and compliance with the European Machinery Directive. You will be responsible for developing and implementing safety standards. This includes conducting risk assessments, ensuring all equipment meets regulatory standards, and integrating essential safety features into the terminal's design. Your expertise will guide compliance with safety regulations and through collaboration with engineering teams, you will help to create a safe and efficient environment in our innovative port automation project.

Scope of work & key responsibilities

  • Define a concept for ensuring machinery safety in a complex environment where efficiency and safety go hand in hand.

  • Work with regulatory bodies and external stakeholders to establish a compliant terminal infrastructure over the entire life cycle.

  • Conduct risk assessments and safety audits for automated port operations.

  • Efficiently coordinate safety related topics between internal departments of Logistica Giuliana and HHLA such as Operations, Asset, Equipment, IT & Automation, Procurement.

  • Anticipate potential challenges within the area of expertise and mitigate those risks.

What you bring

  • Good English (Italian and German are a plus)

  • Experience (+3 years) in machinery safety and conformity design

  • Degree in Engineering or equivalent experience

  • Experience in industrial, automated, logistics, manufacturing, intralogistics, port, or heavy infrastructure environments

  • Understanding of Port Terminals (highly preferred)

  • Knowledge of functional safety principles, machinery risk assessment methodologies, and CE conformity processes

  • Experience working within multidisciplinary engineering or EPC projects is considered a strong advantage

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and manage multiple projects simultaneously

  • Excellent project management skills

  • Champion Safety: Comply with all safety rules and foster a safety culture within the team

  • Support the department and business unit proactively by being willing to learn and contribute wherever needed

  • Act with integrity and accountability by ensuring all actions are aligned with compliance guidelines

The ideal candidate would have a valid EU work permit and would be willing to relocate to Trieste in short notice.
