The twelve mega-freighters of this class, which the shipyard has been delivering since April, are the biggest container ships in the world with a capacity of almost 24,000 standard containers (TEU).
The HMM Algeciras was the first ship of this series to visit Burchardkai at the beginning of June. The special thing about its recently arrived sister ship is clearly her name, as the Hamburg shipping company representative also emphasises: “We are delighted to be welcoming the HMM Hamburg to our port for the first time. Every member of the HMM branch in Hamburg, which has been here for almost 30 years, is looking forward to its arrival with a special sense of pride. The name of the ship represents the special relationship between South Korea and the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg,” says James Kim, Managing Director HMM (Germany) GmbH & Co. KG, Hamburg.
With a view toward the development of ship sizes in recent years, HHLA prepared to handle these ships with an entire package of intelligent measures because of the enormous cargo volumes to be handled and forwarded within the shortest of time frames for a ship call like this. This requires top performance levels from employees and terminal technology. This led to the creation of additional capacities for handling ultra large container vessels with a cargo volume of 24,000 standard containers (TEU) and more.
The HMM Hamburg sails along the FE-3 liner service of the “THE Alliance” shipping alliance between Asia and Europe and visits the Port of Hamburg four times a year. The 400-metre-long and 61-metre-wide container giant is expected to leave Burchardkai during the night from Wednesday to Thursday.
