Experience the Speicherstadt like never before

The project “Digital Speicherstadt” will make it possible to experience Hamburg’s Speicherstadt digitally. A range of applications were developed for this purpose, such as an app with historic photos, audio plays and augmented reality functions. The city collaborated with internet provider Wilhelm.tel to install a readily accessible, free wireless network in the Speicherstadt to ensure optimal use of the services on-site. The project was supported by Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA), who owns the Speicherstadt.

Dr. Roland Lappin, member of the Executive Board of HHLA: “The ‘Digital Speicherstadt’ project is an important step for the district on the path to a digital future. With its high-performance, freely accessible wireless network, the ‘Digital Speicherstadt’ app and the virtual reality applications, a new standard is being set for public spaces, which is highly attractive for tourists and residents of Hamburg alike.”

The project was launched by the Hamburg Department of Culture and Media. Other partners involved in the project, in addition to the Department and HHLA, were the Historic Museums Foundation Hamburg, Dataport, Norddeutscher Rundfunk, Google Arts & Culture, the Fraunhofer Institute for Open Communication Systems, HITeC, the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (HAW), IG Kulturquartier, the University of Hamburg and Wilhelm.tel.

“Digital Speicherstadt” is part of the city’s digitalisation strategy in the cultural sector. This strategy should make the cultural assets digitally accessible and thus provide comprehensive access to Hamburg’s cultural heritage. In addition to the app, which is available for free on both the Android and iOS app stores, virtual reality stations have been set up in the Dialoghaus and the Speicherstadt has its own entry on the Google Arts & Culture platform.
