METRANS and INTERPORT team up to modernise terminal in eastern Slovakia

METRANS, the rail logistics subsidiary of Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA), and INTERPORT Servis s.r.o. are teaming up in a joint project to modernise an intermodal terminal near the eastern Slovak city of Košice. The companies are establishing a cooperation that will create a new ecosystem for international logistics. This initiative strengthens the economically vibrant region at the eastern border of the European Union.

The new terminal, named as TIP Košice (Terminál Intermodálnej Prepravy – Intermodal Transport Terminal), is set to become a key hub in Eastern Europe’s transport infrastructure. It will serve as a model for integrated logistics development, sustainable growth, and regional connectivity. The partnership leverages the strengths of both organisations: METRANS contributes decades of expertise in European rail logistics, while INTERPORT provides in-depth regional knowledge and development capabilities.

Together, the partnership will transform the site into a multifunctional logistics hub. At its core will be one of Slovakia’s most advanced intermodal terminals, equipped with digital and automated technologies. A unique feature of the terminal is its dual-gauge infrastructure, which combines standard and broad-gauge tracks. The two gantry cranes will enable efficient transshipment of goods arriving via broad-gauge rail - such as from Ukraine - and their seamless transfer onto trains operating on the European standard-gauge network.

Peter Kiss, CEO of METRANS: “We are witnessing highly dynamic development in this region where the METRANS Group has been operating since 2008. The new TIP Košice is not just expanding capacity - we are creating a future-proof hub that connects East and West, EU and Ukraine as well as tradition and innovation. Our customers can rely on us as a neutral provider to deliver flexible, sustainable and highly efficient solutions that meet the demands of tomorrow's global supply chains.”

Ľubomír Fronk, CEO of INTERPORT Servis s.r.o.: “Our goal is to make Košice a central hub of the new logistics corridor between the European Union and Ukraine. Together with METRANS, we are transforming this site into a modern terminal that will offer not only state-of-the-art technical equipment but also a strategic location for the future of European logistics.”

Beyond efficient freight handling, the new logistics ecosystem will deliver significant benefits, including:

  • Shortened supply chains,
  • Deployment of digital tools for managing logistics flows,
  • Creation of new employment opportunities for local communities,
  • Enhancement of infrastructure and environmental standards,
  • A platform for connecting businesses within and beyond the region.

The METRANS terminal in Košice has been part of the European METRANS network since 2008. The present site currently comprises nearly 50,000 m² of terminal area. The new project is expanding the capacities. New handling and storage places, two modern rail cranes will be installed to make freight handling even more efficient. The complete expansion is scheduled to be completed by 2027.
