In addition to industrial and commercial apprenticeships, nearly two-thirds of the young professionals have opted for a career specialising in IT or technology. This now puts the total number of young trainees in the company at 94.
Torben Seebold, Chief Human Resources Officer at HHLA: “We at HHLA, are working at full capacity to automate and modernise our processes, including our Hamburg container terminals. In parallel, we are tapping into new business areas with innovative ideas and technologies. Both have in common that we need a lot of employees with a high level of expertise in IT and technology., I therefore am very happy that 33 young talented colleagues have decided to complete their apprenticeship or dual study course with HHLA and will be starting their careers with us today.”
Clarissa Groß, Head of HR Development at HHLA: “In 2024, 21 new apprentices and students are joining us in IT and technology-related vocations. As with all our new recruits and employees, we aim to develop the skills that our company will need in the future to ensure our future success.”
This morning, a new stage of life began for 33 young people at HHLA. Over the coming years, the nine women and 24 men will complete practical training in HHLA’s various facilities and departments as well as at its domestic and foreign subsidiaries. Four of the junior employees will complete their apprenticeship mainly at HHLA’s subsidiaries Container-Transport-Dienst (CTD), FMH Fischmarkt Hamburg-Altona, Hamburger Container- und Chassis-Reparatur-Gesellschaft (HCCR) and Metrans Rail Deutschland.
HHLA offers apprenticeships in industrial, commercial and technical fields, as well as a wide range of dual study courses. Nearly two-thirds of HHLA’s latest recruits have opted for a career specialising in IT or technology, with eight up-and-coming mechatronics engineers, one mechatronics engineer for refrigeration technology, two industrial mechanics and one electronics technician for automation technology starting their apprenticeships with HHLA today. The expertise garnered in these technical apprenticeships will in future help to maintain and repair the high-performance and partially automated handling equipment at HHLA’s container terminals in Hamburg, thus making a great contribution towards ensuring efficient handling.
In terms of the commercial apprenticeships, business people for digitalisation management that HHLA has been training since 2021 are now well established within the company.
HHLA clearly focuses their dual study courses in the areas of mathematics, IT, science and technology, such as computer engineering, business informatics, industrial engineering and mechanical engineering.
The introductory weeks are designed to ensure a successful start and to promote networking within the class and with the training staff. During the first few days, the new apprentices and students will become familiar with the port via boat and bus, gain an overview of the numerous trainee and student projects and receive comprehensive practical information on topics such as invoicing, pension schemes and the Deutschlandticket for public transport. By mid-August they will be familiar with the various areas of HHLA and will subsequently take on their first practical tasks.
HHLA is also offering plenty of apprenticeships and dual study course places starting on 1 August 2025: An Overview can be found here, as well as information on how to apply.
